Two Most Common Types of Arthritis

Two Most Common Types of Arthritis

Our internist, Dr. Steven Ching, sees various patients experiencing joint pain, which is often attributed to arthritis in the knees, hands, hips, or spine. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis

When the protective cartilage between your bones wears out over time and inflames joints. Traditionally treated by soothing the area with heat i.e., heating pads or topical OTC creams like Icy Hot; prescription medications can also be used to reduce inflammations. Physical therapy is another resource that reduces inflammation, strengthening the muscles around the bone to alleviate some of the work that the bone needs to do. For more severe cases, surgery can also be considered.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

A chronic condition where the immune system in the body attacks healthy cells by mistake, causing inflammation. The treatment plan for rheumatoid arthritis is pain mitigation. This can be done through creams and prescriptions, or by following an anti-inflammatory diet.

If you are experiencing joint pain, the best course of action is to see a primary care physician—perhaps Dr. Ching—to determine what type of arthritis you may have and work on a treatment plan together.
