Skincare & Retinoids

Skincare & Retinoids with Dr. Anna Miller

As we get older, we stop producing collagen and our skin regenerates much slower, leading to fine lines and wrinkles. To combat this, Dr. Anna Miller of Rancho Family Medical Group recommends the use of retinoids is an essential part of any skin care routine! Retinoids work by increasing collagen production as well as increasing the rate of skin cell turnover leading to improved skin texture, giving it an even tone and glow, minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, and decreasing pore size.

IMPORTANT POINTS for RETINOIDS

  1. Use them at night 30 minutes after washing your face. Use ultra-gentle cleansers and avoid potentially irritating chemicals such as salicylic and glycolic acid in your daily skin care routine.

  2. Start low and slow.  Start with 0.25% and work your way slowly up to 2% retinol.  Start by using a pea sized amount 2-3 days a week.  After the initial dryness wears off, increase the number of days per week until you are using it every day.

  3. Always follow up a retinoid with a moisturizer. Look for ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, dimethicone and petrolatum in a moisturizer. If especially dry, use the ‘retinoid sandwich technique’. Apply a moisturizer, then retinoid, then moisturizer again.

  4. NEVER wax your eyebrows or face while using retinoids as this could burn and remove the top layer of skin.

SPF & Retinoids

The absolute two best things you can do for your skin are sun protection with SPF 30+ every single day and the use of retinoids at night to boost collagen. For more information, contact Dr. Anna Miller at our Fallbrook office RFMG.
